Black Cockatoo

He arrived before the rain.

The black cockatoo would glide in on heavy wings, cutting a slow arc across the pale morning sky before settling in the old eucalyptus at the edge of town. He wasn’t loud like the sulphur-crested mobs that screamed over rooftops. His call was deeper. Slower. A rolling creak that sounded like the hinge of an ancient door opening somewhere in the bush.

Most people barely noticed him.

But Isla did.

She’d see him from her bedroom window, a dark shape against the light, tail feathers fanned like burnt embers. He would sit still for long stretches, tilting his head as if listening to something far beyond the hum of cars and lawnmowers. When the wind shifted, she swore he was watching her.

Her grandmother used to say black cockatoos carried messages.

“They turn up when something’s changing,” she’d whisper, pressing tea into Isla’s hands. “You listen when they’re around.”

The summer the cockatoo came daily, the river ran thin and brown. The grass crackled underfoot. Adults spoke in tight voices about water restrictions and fire warnings. Isla felt it too — that waiting. That sense that the sky was holding its breath.

One afternoon, thick clouds rolled in from the coast. The air went electric. Isla stood barefoot on the back step when she heard it — that low, wooden call. The cockatoo lifted from the tree, wings beating slow and certain, and headed toward the hills.

Thunder cracked.

Rain followed.

Not a drizzle. Not a tease. A proper, soaking downpour that turned dust to dark soil in minutes. The river would swell by morning.

The cockatoo didn’t return the next day. Or the next.

But sometimes, when the wind bends the treetops and the air smells like wet earth, Isla looks up anyway — half expecting to see that black silhouette carving across the sky.

Because some creatures don’t stay.

They just arrive when they’re needed.
